Founding Trustee
Sir Graeme has over 50 years experience of working in sport and health – his vision for sport, performance and wellbeing has led to the establishment of the HBCFCT.
As a young man, Sir Graeme’s passion for sport was evident early, from playing first-grade rugby in Sydney and competing as a 400-metre runner. In 1978, Avery co-founded the North Shore Bays Athletics Club.
In 2000, he was involved in the founding and development of the AUT Millennium Institute of Sport & Health on Auckland’s North Shore. This world-class facility brought his vision to life: to enhance the health and lifestyles of people through access to elite sport and health facilities, community-based outreach, research, and education.
This vision turned his focus to Hawke’s Bay, establishing the EIT Institute of Sport & Health in 2016. His goal, shared by those who work alongside him, has been to see Hawke’s Bay recognised as a leading region for sport, health, and performance excellence.
Passionate about helping people reach their full potential, Sir Graeme continues to inspire future generations to embrace healthy lifestyles, wellbeing, and positive habits from an early age.
His work reflects a strong belief: that through sport and education, communities can thrive, and individuals can become the best they can be.

His vision and leadership also saw the inclusion of the Hydrotherapy Centre, now named in his honour, supporting rehabilitation, recovery, and athlete performance.
Originally from Australia, Bruce is well known in New Zealand as the creator and former owner of Spark Arena, and for his global work delivering major sporting and cultural events, including the acclaimed arena show Walking with Dinosaurs.

Founder of Populous People, Rachel Cornwall is genuinely curious about what makes us all tick and is committed to seeing people and organisations adapt and grow.
Finding people, keeping people, and seeing people, organisations, communities and our economy grow – that’s what gets Rachel out of bed each day.
“Where does that come from? My good old-fashioned work ethic, and genuine desire to do good! My origins are in small town provincial NZ, and I’m a proud Otago University graduate with a career that’s exposed me to broad range of corporate, commercial and community experiences, here in NZ and abroad. I’m a long-time fan of the pace and diversity of urban NZ, but I’m also an Auckland escapee now firmly nestled in Hawke's Bay.
Over the years I’ve been tempted to detour off into leadership roles, but I can’t go past the satisfaction of helping multiple businesses and communities achieve more, by partnering in people strategy. I can’t and won’t ever be able to shrug off my absolute determination to make sure small and large, start-up or established businesses, across all sectors and industries can source the talent, skills, expertise and leadership that is required to take them and their teams into the future.”
