Since opening in June 2022, Avery House has become a vital resource for athletes and teams. With thousands of bed nights already recorded, the facility has hosted prestigious squads, including Swimming NZ, Hurricanes U20s, NZ Rugby U20s, Silver Ferns, Black Sticks, Olympic athletes, New Zealand Cricket and numerous other sports teams and athletes from New Zealand and overseas.
Located in the heart of Mitre 10 Park, Avery House was designed to provide state-of-the-art accommodation for national and regional sports teams. Its opening has not only bolstered local tourism but also strengthened the community's ties to sports of all levels. Within walking distance to the Regional Aquatic Centre, canoe polo centre and CD Crickets impressive facilities, Avery House is in the perfect location.
Hosting college students for the Wairoa Aspiring Leaders Camp, run by Hawke's Bay Community Fitness Centre Trust, the students participated in the Aspiring Leaders Programme, which was conducted on site utilising all the on-site facilities.
“The response from teams has been overwhelmingly positive,” said Kelly James who oversees operations at Avery House. “We’re proud to provide a space that caters to the needs of our athletes while showcasing the best of what our region has to offer.”
The facility features modern amenities, team lounges and communal areas designed to foster teamwork and collaboration. Its strategic location allows easy access to training grounds and local sporting venues, making it an ideal base for teams preparing for competitions.
Feedback from teams has been encouraging, with many praising the supportive environment and high-quality accommodations. “The accommodation was excellent from the coaches and player rooms which were spacious, clean & comfortable to the eating & meeting areas around the kitchen. It made it so easy for us to hold our team gatherings to discuss everything from group to individual planning. At either end of the accommodation wings there are lounges which we used for our medical and physio teams to set up and treat the players before & after trainings. All in all a huge success. Thank you for making the experience of coming to Hawke’s Bay so enjoyable.” said Bob Carter (NZ Cricket’s High Performance Coach).
As Avery House continues to host various sporting teams, it looks poised to become a cornerstone of New Zealand’s athletic landscape. With its commitment to supporting sports and community, Avery House is set to play a significant role in hosting teams from New Zealand and further afield for years to come.
