Making Strides in His Rehabilitation Journey - Strat’s Inspiring Comeback

We see many rehabilitation success stories come through our doors. Recently, one story that has deeply moved our team is Strat Ellingham, a 70-year-old triathlete in training whose determination is nothing short of inspiring.

In July last year, Strat’s life took a dramatic turn when he was out cycling in preparation for a world championship and was involved in a car accident that left him with severe spinal injuries and a significant loss of sensation in his arms and legs.

After spending five months at the Burwood Spinal Unit, Strat began the first steps of his rehabilitation journey in January at our aquatic centre. Initially unable to get out of his wheelchair, he has gradually rebuilt his strength and mobility. With the ongoing support of Geneva Healthcare and physio, Strat can now walk 1.2km in the pool - a remarkable milestone in his recovery.

Making regular use of our gym facilities, combining aquatic therapy with strength training. He credits the equipment and accessibility at our centre as instrumental in his progress.

Strat wanted to make special mention of the friendly and encouraging staff who greet him with a smile each morning, ensure he has the equipment he needs, and regularly check in on his progress. Their ongoing support has made a meaningful difference in his rehabilitation journey.

Now, one year since his accident, Strat has made incredible strides. Just this week, he walked through our doors using a frame - not his usual wheelchair. It’s a powerful reminder of resilience and the importance of community support.

We are incredibly proud to offer facilities that support rehabilitation journeys like Strat’s - from our accessible aquatic centre with water wheelchairs and pool pods, to our community gym and on-site physio clinic.

Strat’s story is one of many, and it’s why we remain committed to providing a place where people can heal, grow, and defy the odds. Thank you Strat, for staying positive and being an inspiration to us all.
